Mount Baldo - Monte Baldo

The massif of Mount Baldo is located east of Lake Garda. It extends for about 30 km north to south, with peaks reaching 2,200 m (about 7,200 ft). Because of the influence of the nearby lake the weather is mild, and it creates a xerothermic area which, together with the rapid change in altitude, favors an extremely interesting variety of habitats and flora. For this reason Mount Baldo is also called Hortus Europae (Garden of Europe).
On Mount Baldo you can observe Golden Eagle, Black Kite (which can be seen also from the Malcesine-Pra' Alpesina air cableway), Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Goshawk, Peregrine Falcon and Kestrel; in 1992 a Lammergeier was sighted!
Black Grouse is common, Capercaillie and Eagle Owl now are very rare.
Nesting are Black Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Alpine Swift, Alpine Chough, Spotted Nutcrack, Ring Ouzel, Common Crossbill, Bullfinch, Linnet and Water Pipit.

Il massiccio del Monte Baldo si estende ad est del Lago di Garda per una trentina di Km da nord a sud, con cime che arrivano ai 2200 mt. Per la vicinanza del Garda, il clima è mite, creando una zona xerotermica che comporta, anche per la rapida escursione altimetrica, una varietà d'ambiente e di flora interessantissima, tanto che il Baldo è chiamato anche Hortus Europae.
Sul Baldo è avvistabile l'Aquila reale che nidifica più frequentemente nella zona trentina del rilievo, ma anche Nibbio bruno (persino dalla funivia Malcesine-Pra' Alpesina), Poiana, Sparviere, Astore, Falco pellegrino e Gheppio; nel 1992 è stato osservato anche un Gipeto!
Il Fagiano di monte è comune, mentre il Gallo cedrone è occasionale, rari Gufo reale e Coturnice.
Nidificanti sono Picchio nero, Picchio verde, Rondone maggiore, Gracchio, Nocciolaia, Merlo dal collare, Codirossone, Sordone, Crociere, Ciuffolotto, Fanello e Spioncello.

How to get there You can easily take the air cableway from Malcesine (on Lake Garda) to Pra’ Alpesina. From the eastern side, you can take the A22 (Brennero freeway) to Affi, then follow directions to Ferrara di M.te Baldo, Spiazzi, then Novezzina. It is worth to take a walk on the scenic Ventrar trail, which offers a great view of Lake Garda. Come arrivare Si può arrivare facilmente sul Baldo a Pra' Alpesina dal lago di Garda con la funivia a Malcesine. Dal versante orientale, invece, uscendo dalla A22 (autostrada del Brennero) al casello di Affi seguite le indicazioni per Ferrara di M.te Baldo, Spiazzi e poi Novezzina. Un sentiero molto bello (con panorama del Garda) è quello del Ventrar.
